Work permit
What is a work permit?
A work permit is actually a type of document that is issued to an employer, which allows them to employ a person/people from outside the European Economic Area. Work permits are not the same as general visas or entry clearances. Employers would actually need to demonstrate that there is no/or they could not find any suitably qualified person inside the EU for the vacant position, if they wish to apply for work permits. Employers also need to advertise the vacancy across Europe to be able to give priority to those people who might have the skills and ability for the specific job, which live in the EU/UK, before a work permit can be issued.
The actual policy behind work permits is to protect the job opportunities for resident workers in the UK, by putting a balance between giving permission to employers to transfer and employ skilled people from abroad, whilst not giving away job that residents can apply.
What nationalities are eligible for the work permit?
EEA and EU citizens are entitled to live and work in the UK, which means that they don’t need to apply for this type of permit; however citizens from other countries (not in the EU/EEA) that are not entitled to live and work in the UK need to apply for a work permit to be able to live and work in the UK.
The Citizens of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey have different requirements for the applications and certain exemptions, to live and work in the UK. For more information please contact us.
